The BaoFeng BF-F8HP is a dual band 2m/70cm handheld that makes an affordable entry level amateur radio transceiver. Though able to transmit and receive VHF/UHF business and emergency services frequencies, it is unlawful for that purpose as it does not have part 90 certification. The BF-F8HP receives NOAA weather radio broadcasts as well as. This is a sensitive transceiver that picks up fringe FM radio stations very well. It lacks somewhat in selectivity and near frequency signals can cause the squelch to open with only static noise to report. This is not a major concern when operating in the field, on the trails and camp grounds. It can be a problem in a thriving metropolis but is manageable. Battery life is good and the unit can reach 2m repeaters up to 25 miles away. The BF-F8HP is field programmable by the NASA engineers among us, but the rest of us should use a 3rd party USB programming cable and free CHIRP programming software -links below. The internal speaker can be difficult to understand at times but the BaoFeng external microphone will quickly fix that issue -link also below. This is a FM analog transceiver with no options for digital modes or encryption. Encryption is not available to amateur radio operators, but even unencrypted digital modes are all beyond this transceiver. This is a fine choice those just passing the Technician class exam and are looking their first transceiver. There are many useful accessories and tons of advice all over the internet for this handheld. The BF-F8HP is a good starter radio to use and learn as you determine where you want to do in the amateur radio hobby.
